Description

Scribblenauts Unlimited explores the origin of Maxwell’s magical notebook, which can create almost anything written inside it. After Maxwell uses the notebook to give a hungry man a rotten apple, the man curses his sister Lily, causing her to turn gradually to stone. Maxwell must reverse the curse by travelling between more than 40 locations and helping their inhabitants, earning Starite shards and complete Starites for resolving their problems. The areas include themed settings populated by characters with short quests.

The game is played through Maxwell in 2D environments while you enter words through the Wii U GamePad. Writing a noun summons the corresponding object, animal, person, or creature, while adjectives alter its appearance, behaviour, size, condition, or abilities. You might rescue a cat with a ladder, helicopter, firefighter, trampoline, or by cutting down the tree, with a vast number of solutions enabled with the game’s systems. Existing objects and characters can also be modified, allowing near-endless combinations. Longer Starite missions contain several connected objectives, while smaller requests award individual shards. The game generally accepts multiple solutions, although some challenges impose restrictions to prevent the same convenient objects from solving everything. Its simple AI can also produce unexpected interactions between created creatures, weapons, vehicles, and environmental objects, giving the game a creative toy box feel as much as a conventional puzzle adventure.

The Wii U edition makes the most of the GamePad using it for movement, object placement, word entry, and editing, while the TV displays the same play area for spectators. The Object Editor can combine existing items, change their colours and proportions, assign behaviours, and create customised objects entirely. Creations could be shared online, extending the available selection beyond the game’s extensive built-in vocabulary. The Wii U version also includes exclusive Nintendo characters and objects, allowing figures such as Mario, Luigi, Link, and Zelda to be summoned, although these cannot be altered as freely.

The game received praise for its vocabulary size, the flexibility of its adjective system, a colourful presentation, and the amusement created by unconventional solutions and accidental interactions. The Object Editor further expands its creative potential, ideal for younger players as it can be time-consuming. Its weakness is that many puzzles can be bypassed with a small set of broadly useful creations, so you are not forced to experiment. Retrospectively, Scribblenauts Unlimited provides one of the series’ most complete expressions of its central concept, combining structured puzzles with an accessible sandbox that rewards curiosity, vocabulary, and playful misuse of its systems.
