Bundled in Set
Description
The Mic Holder for Controller allows the Voice Recognition Unit’s microphone to be clipped on directly to the Nintendo 64 controller, ensuring stable placement during gameplay. The design allowed players to keep their hands free for standard controls while maintaining reliable voice detection. This was provided alongside the neck-strap Mic Holder. The holder allowed the microphone to be used handsfree, improving the voice input even if the player moved or shifted around.
The N64 VRS package included two holders, one for the controller and one for the neck, reflecting the uncharted territory that was voice-driven gameplay. At this stage it wasn’t clear how players would prefer to use the Mic, or which approach was more comfortable. Later the Dreamcast’s Microphone went for the controller attachment method where as the Xbox went for a headset approach.
Both holders were important for N64 software that used the microphone, where accurate voice input was essential to gameplay. Both represent approaches to the same problem: maintaining reliable voice detection with the hardware and software of the era. One anchored the microphone to the controller, while the other offered a wearable option, giving players a choice in how they interacted with the VRU system.
