Description
The Joy-Con 2 controllers retain the familiar split-controller concept but swap the old sliding rail for a powerful magnetic mounting system. Instead of lining up and sliding into place, each Joy-Con simply “snaps” to the side of the Switch 2, held firmly by magnets, then releases via a larger rear button that pops a pin out to push the controller away. They are also larger with longer grips, wider SL/SR triggers and slightly larger analog sticks.
The second generation Joy-Cons also hold several new bits of hardware. Both feature an optical “mouse” sensor on the side rail that lets you lay a detached Joy-Con flat to control a pointer. The right controller gains a dedicated C Button, which instantly launches Nintendo’s built‐in GameChat system i.e. voice and video calls, real-time screen sharing and webcam overlays and no longer needing a separate app. Haptic feedback is also improved with more nuanced vibration patterns compared to the original Joy-Cons. Battery life on the Joy-Con 2 clocks in at roughly 20 hours per pair, charged either when docked on the console or via the optional charging grip. Internally, they still run Bluetooth, have a gyro and accelerometer for motion sensors, and support NFC for amiibo.
