The popular 2D fighting game that features digitised martial arts and hyper violence within arcade competitive combat.
Description
Mortal Kombat II ported to the 32X presents the same roster and mechanics as the arcade original, with characters such as Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub‑Zero, Kitana, and Mileena performing special moves and fatalities in one‑on‑one battles. The game retains the digitised actor sprites and distinctive arenas, emphasising blood effects and finishing moves as its defining identity.
The 32X port was intended to deliver a closer approximation of the arcade experience than the 16‑bit versions, with improved colour depth, sharper backgrounds, and faster animation. It sits in the context of the 32X itself, a poorly supported mid-gen upgrade that was commercially failing. Mortal Kombat II is one of the stronger 32X fighting titles, greatly improving graphics and sound over the Mega Drive release.
Contemporary reception judged the port competent but not transformative, noting that while it surpassed the 16-bit ports, it was still fell short of the arcade’s fluidity, audio quality, and some missing effects. Despite this, it had detailed sprites and smooth animation showing the advancements of the hardware. If you were cashed up back during this period and happy to drop on the latest hardware every 6 months it was a great time. For everyone else, the port would ultimately be overshadowed by the platform’s limited library and short lifespan.
The PAL version’s UPC is 3455198100532. Unclear what the Ozisoft one is; on occasion they would re-use for different games. This item is in storage, so I will update upon checking. Notably this appears to be quite rare as no Australian copies have surfaced on the regular marketplaces and retro game sellers.
