A port of the model arcade game of the same name. This is a 3D space combat simulator based on the original Star Wars trilogy, allowing players to pilot an X-wing or Y-wing through missions inspired by the films. The game features fast-paced dogfighting and trench run sequences which really showed off the 32X’s enhanced graphical capabilities.
Description
Star Wars Arcade was one of the 32X’s launch titles, designed to demonstrate the add-on’s ability to render filled polygons and simulate 3D spaceflight. Players take on the role of a Rebel pilot flying an X-wing or Y-wing through a series of missions based on the original Star Wars trilogy, including battles against TIE Fighters, Star Destroyers, and the Death Star trench run.
Gameplay alternates between first-person cockpit views and third-person chase perspectives, with players targeting enemies using a lock-on system and managing shields, lasers, and torpedoes. The game supports two-player co-op, with one player piloting and the other controlling weapons, a feature that adds both depth and replay value.
While the 32X version lacks the arcade’s smooth frame rate and high-resolution textures, it retains the core structure and feel, with simplified but effective visuals and digitised voice samples. The game was developed by Sega AM3 and LucasArts, two impressive studios, and it shows. The soundtrack features chiptune renditions of John Williams’ iconic score, reinforcing the game’s cinematic roots.
Star Wars Arcade was praised at launch for its ambition and visual fidelity relative to contemporaneous 16-bit titles, though its short length and repetitive gameplay limited its long-term appeal. Retrospectively it’s a good showcase for the 32X’s potential, even if few games followed its lead.
