Description
NBA 2K1 arrived in Japan several months after its North American debut. It brought Visual Concepts’ acclaimed second entry in the series — covering the 2000–01 NBA season to the NTSC‑J market. The core gameplay was identical to the US version, with updated rosters, refined controls, and the addition of new features such as the street/blacktop mode, which allowed 2‑on‑2 to 5‑on‑5 outdoor games, and the inclusion of 50 legendary players from past eras like Wilt Chamberlain and Larry Bird.
Online play was supported via the Dreamcast’s built‑in modem, though Japanese players connected to separate regional servers from their US counterparts. While the packaging and manual were fully localised into Japanese, much of the in‑game commentary and presentation remained in English, a common practice for sports titles in Japan at the time. Famitsu reviewed the game favourably, awarding it a 30/40 score.
In Japan it was bundled with a thick, all‑in‑one guidebook ‘Bible’. The book served as both a manual and a handbook for players who might not be familiar with basketball or the game’s systems.
