Description

Macross M3 is a curious entry in the long-running Macross franchise. At time it can be both notable yet underwhelming. It offers a rare opportunity to explore the lore from the perspective of less mainstream characters like Maximilian and Milia Jenius, aiming to bridge narrative gaps within the larger Macross timeline. While the game attempts to deepen character history, its execution often falls short of the dramatic and visual spectacle the series is known for.

From a gameplay standpoint, Macross M3 delivers functional, if unremarkable, arcade style aerial combat with its transforming variable fighters (Valkyries). The mission structure is repetitive, the controls feel stiff, and the visuals—though serviceable—lack the dynamic flair seen in other Dreamcast action titles. It suffers especially in comparison to Macross Plus: Game Edition on PS2 or even older titles like Macross: Do You Remember Love? on the Saturn, both of which offered a more engaging balance between fan service, narrative coherence, and gameplay intensity. Compared to its contemporaries in the mecha genre, Macross M3 feels restrained. It neither captures the cinematic ambition of Zone of the Enders nor the mechanical depth of Armored Core 2, both on the PS2. Instead Macross M3 settles on being safe, uninspired, and formulaic. Despite this mediocrity, the game would still be appealing to Macross fans.
