Grandia Memorial Package

グランディア メモリアルパッケージ

A re-release of the RPG, discounted (slightly) with new case art; the game discs are of the original product ID (T-4507G).

Description

Grandia presents a journey of discovery through the travels of Justin and companions, structured around a hybrid battle system that combines turn based commands with an initiative bar that governs action order, interruption, and positioning. You explore towns, dungeons, and traverse the overworld with contextual events, while party growth introduces new skills, combo attacks, and support abilities that deepen encounter planning. Presentation integrates voiced scenes, animated sequences, and detailed environmental art, situating emotional storytelling alongside mechanical clarity. Systems foreground readable telegraphs and cancel windows, encouraging players to manipulate timing to disrupt enemy actions and coordinate party roles.
Grandia originates as a project conceived for the Mega CD by Game Arts, the studio already known for Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue. Development began with the intention of creating a successor that would build upon the cinematic storytelling and animated sequences that had distinguished the Lunar series. The Mega CD hardware, however, proved restrictive for the scale of the envisioned world and the complexity of the battle system, leading Game Arts to shift production to the Sega Saturn. This allowed the game to greatly expand environments, sprite detail, and implement the initiative bar combat system that became the game’s defining feature.
This Grandia Memorial Package is a re-release of the original game. It contains the same exact discs (with the original product code), but comes with new cover art and game manual, alongside a reduce price.
The originality of the battle system, the warmth of the cast, and the adventurous tone carried the experience. The game had beautiful worldbuilding that was earnest and engaging, with side content reinforcing the theme of discovery. Game Arts made some genuinely lovely works during this period. Grandia would later be ported to the PlayStation, which received a western localisation. A sequel in Grandia II was released initially on Sega’s Dreamcast.
