Oh Mummy
A fast maze game in which an archaeologist circles burial chambers to uncover treasure, keys, and protective scrolls while avoiding increasingly aggressive mummies.
Description
Oh Mummy was included with many early CPC 464 packages and became one of the system’s best-known introductory games. The player leads an expedition through Egyptian pyramids, entering successive tombs to recover their contents while evading the mummified guardians. Each stage contains a grid of burial chambers separated by narrow paths. The player leaves footprints while moving and reveals a chamber’s contents by completely surrounding it. Hidden objects include treasure, the key required to open the exit, a tomb that completes the escape route, and a scroll capable of destroying one mummy. Some chambers instead release additional enemies, which can follow the player into later stages if not eliminated. Completing a pyramid increases the speed and number of mummies, with play continuing through progressively harder layouts.
The title features graphics and looping music that are simple, but movement is responsive and the game accessible with rules immediately understandable. Later stages become tense as mummies converge from several directions and careless routes leave the player trapped against existing footprints or walls. Its limited variety and soundtrack can become repetitive, but the combination of route planning, risk, and escalating speed remains addictive. Oh Mummy was well received as an accessible early CPC title and is still remembered more fondly for its straightforward arcade design than for technical sophistication.
