Original Xbox software titles officially supported by backwards compatibility on Xbox 360 systems. The Xbox 360, based on the PowerPC architecture is backwards compatible with select number of original Xbox games, which were compiled for an x86 architecture. Microsoft implemented a custom emulator for each supported game that translates x86 instructions into PPC, handling system calls and GPU differences through a combination of software-based emulation and translation techniques.
