A compilation of traditional table games presented as demonstration and community of online gaming introduced with Xbox Live in Japan.
Bundled in Set
Description
Zunou Taisen Live (lit. Mind Battle Live) packages Othello, Go, Mahjong, and Shogi into a single title designed for play through Xbox Live. Each game retains its authentic rules while adopting a digital interface suited to console presentation, and the structure emphasises competitive matches across the network rather than audiovisual spectacle. The compilation was initially distributed in Japan as part of the Xbox Live Starter Kit, as a showcase for the service. This came in a cardboard case and shared media with Xbox Live Starter Kit Disc, which contained install files for Xbox Live when it first launched. A re-print/DVD case version of Zunou Taisen Live was later distributed free with Famitsu Magazine.
The title is faithful and offered variety, with the inclusion of multiple table games of regional significance. The presentation was quite basic, but entirely functional. The appeal was strongest for players already invested in Xbox Live, since the games themselves were familiar and lacked the technical or visual novelty of other console releases. The initial Xbox Live starter kit also came with Phantasy Star Online, which had much greater appeal. Zunou Taisen Live is mostly an artefact of the Xbox’s Japanese market launch of its online services, demonstrating the possibilities of online play with a title localised to traditional Japanese pastimes.
