Super Lucky’s Tale is a 3D platformer positioned as one of the launch titles for the Xbox One X, designed to showcase a bright, family‑friendly alternative to the console’s more mature offerings. The game is a sequel to Lucky’s Tale (2016), which had been a VR‑exclusive title for Oculus Rift, but this entry was built for traditional play without the need for virtual reality hardware.

The story follows Lucky Swiftail, a cheerful and adventurous fox, who is drawn into the magical Book of Ages after his sister Lyra attempts to protect it from the villainous sorcerer Jinx and his mischievous children, the Kitty Litter. Each world within the book becomes a hub area, containing multiple levels that Lucky must complete to collect clovers and progress. The narrative is light‑hearted, with a whimsical tone that complements the colourful environments and cartoon‑like characters.

Gameplay blends 3D exploration with occasional 2D side‑scrolling stages, offering variety while keeping the mechanics accessible. Each level contains four clovers to collect: one for completing the stage, one for gathering 300 coins, one for finding the hidden letters spelling “LUCKY,” and one for solving a secret or challenge‑based task. This structure encourages replayability and rewards thorough exploration. Additional puzzle stages, such as marble‑maze challenges and block‑pushing puzzles, provide further variety. Boss battles against members of the Kitty Litter punctuate the progression, testing players’ mastery of the mechanics.

The game was praised its charm, colourful presentation, and nostalgic nods to classic platformers of the 1990s, but unfortunately its camera control was also quite 90s (that’s bad!) and it had relatively simple level design. The game still found an audience among younger players and fans of traditional mascot platformers. Its legacy was strengthened by the release of New Super Lucky’s Tale between 2019 and 2020, which reworked the original with redesigned levels, tighter controls, and expanded content, and is generally regarded as the definitive version.
