Connect two or more Game Boy Advance systems for multiplayer gaming and data exchange. Notably only works for GBA software.
Description
The GBA Game Link Cable was an essential accessory for social gaming on the handheld, continuing Nintendo’s legacy of link-based multiplayer that started with the original Game Boy. It enabled multiplayer gaming for two to four players in compatible games. Data trading/sharing to trade items, like in Pokémon, or other data between game cartridges. A marketed feature of the GBA was single-cartridge multiplayer. Some games allow multiple players to play together with just one cartridge, such as Mario Kart.
Architecturally it introduced a new signalling system. The earlier Game Link Cable for the original Game Boy was designed for linking two systems exclusively. Although there was separately a 4-person adaptor for the earliest Game Boy, this was relatively short-lived. The new GBA link cabling could daisy-chain up to 3 of these cables to connect up to 4 consoles providing an elegant system that did not require additional hardware just for 3 or 4 players and saw a resurgence in this multi-player feature on the handheld. This was particularly notable for East Asian markets where social and community play was much more common. Importantly, if you are playing a Game Boy or Game Boy Color game on the Game Boy Advance you would still need to use the older Game Link Cable as this newer version was not compatible.
