AC Adapter

ACアダプタ

An official 100V power supply unit for the Nintendo 64. It features a modular design that sees an external power supply function like an internal module, plugged into the back of the console.

Description

The Nintendo 64 AC Power Supply is a detachable power brick that connects directly into the console’s rear slot. The official adaptor is black, with a short cable leading to the wall plug.  It was designed as a modular unit, making it easy to replace if damaged. This unit was for the Japanese market, so was designed for 100V 50/60Hz input. It converts mains power into dual DC voltages.

When the N64 launched in 1996, Nintendo opted for a distinctive design: rather than an internal power supply like the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation, or an external power supply like prior Nintendo and Sega consoles, they adopted an hybrid approach. The Nintendo 64 AC Power Supply is an external unit that plugs into the back of the unit. This results in a modular internal yet external power supply. The design allowed Nintendo to tailor the adaptor for different regions without altering the console itself. North America, Japan, Europe, and Australia each had their own plug standards, but the brick itself remained the same form factor. These power supplies can be switched e.g. you can use a 240V power supply on a Japanese console without issue.

This adaptor draws AC power from a standard wall socket and internally regulates it into the two DC voltages the Nintendo 64 requires: 3.3V and 12V. Although multiple voltages are common in this era for internal power supplies it was unusual for an external power supply. Modern aftermarket versions often feature lighter builds and universal voltage support (100–245V AC input), making them compatible across regions. These replacements typically output 3.3V DC at 2.7A and 12V DC at 0.8A, matching the original specifications. However, modern USB-C replacements are more complex to implement due to the dual voltage. Instead of sending a straight 9V or 12V through, they often take a 15V input then regulate the required voltages.

Unlike just about every other system, the N64’s modular internal/external brick made servicing and regional adaptation easier while remaining neat and clean. A solution that was never really repeated and become redundant with modern universal power supplies.
