Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 6 is the third Powerful Pro Yakyū release for the Nintendo 64 and uses players and teams from Japan’s 1999 professional baseball season, with abilities informed by the completed 1998 season. Its Scenario mode recreates decisive situations from 1998 games, including several involving the Yokohama BayStars, who had won the Japan Series that year. The game retains the series’ distinctive super-deformed players and Japanese commentary while expanding its combination of arcade-style baseball, team management, and character development.

The game features increasingly diverse modes, including Exhibition, League, standard Pennant, Scenario, Training Camp, Home Run Competition, team arrangement, and Success. The new Dramatic Pennant begins with spring training and allows the player to develop the abilities and condition of pitchers, catchers, infielders, and outfielders before completing the regular season. Success moves from the high-school setting of Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 5 to university baseball, featuring six universities with different teammates, stories, training structures, and development conditions. Money is introduced in management, requiring the student character to cover living and club expenses and, at some universities, undertake part-time work while attempting to attract the attention of professional scouts.

Compared its predecessor, the game doubles the number of Success settings from three schools to six universities, separates their supporting casts and development systems more clearly, and introduces player development into Pennant through its Dramatic variant. It also supports transferring players from the Game Boy version through the 64GB Pak, while the number of custom teams that can be registered increases from eight to 12. It was praised the expanded Success structure, improved match pacing, additional special abilities, and the strategic development offered by Dramatic Pennant, while noting that its detailed preseason training can become time-consuming. It was the highest-selling third-party Nintendo 64 game in Japan reflecting being the system’s strongest baseball releases and an important stage in establishing the deeper career and team-development systems used by later entries.
