The Variety Kit, formally titled Nintendo Labo: Toy-Con 01 Variety Kit, was the first entry in the Labo series, launched a year into the Switch’s life. It was sold as a stand‑alone package, requiring only the Nintendo Switch console and Joy‑Con controllers to function. It includes pre-cut cardboard sheets, reflective stickers, sponge pads, strings, eyelets, and rubber bands, along with a game card containing interactive build instructions, mini-games, and the Toy-Con Garage programming environment. No glue or scissors are required, and all necessary materials are provided in the box.

The kit’s five principal Toy-Con offer varied experiences:

• RC Car: Controlled via HD Rumble and the IR motion camera in the Joy-Con, with options for manual steering or autonomous movement.
• Fishing Rod: Simulates ocean fishing with a reel mechanism and tension feedback.
• House: Lets players interact with a virtual creature by inserting different blocks to trigger mini-games.
• Motorbike: Provides immersive racing with tilt controls and the ability to design custom tracks.
• Piano: A 13-key instrument that uses reflective stickers and the IR camera to detect key presses, enabling music creation and recording.

As with all Labo products, the Variety Kit emphasises Nintendo’s “Make, Play, Discover” philosophy. Beyond assembly and gameplay, the software includes discovery modules explaining how Joy-Con sensors, such as gyroscopes and infrared cameras, interact with the cardboard mechanisms. The Toy-Con Garage mode allows users to experiment with custom configurations, fostering creativity and technical understanding. The kit was sold as a single SKU worldwide, with only packaging language varying by region.
