Sports Connection
A sports compilation that gathers multiple activities into one package, emphasising accessibility, multiplayer energy, and the appeal of casual competition across varied disciplines.
Description
Sports Connection was a Wii U launch title and Ubisoft’s attempt to reimagine the incredibly popular Wii Sports for the fancy new GamePad. A six-sport compilation game of tennis, golf, baseball, soccer, karting and football. It combined the Wii MotionPlus swings with GamePad swipes and stylus flicks in hopes of reinventing familiar mini-games. It dazzled in promotions with drawing penalty paths or a golf shot on the touchscreen, then finish swings with the Remote. In practice, though, those clever ideas too often boiled down to rock-paper-scissors chance or repetitive swiping, leaving each sport underwhelming.
Visually the game reflected the existing Wii-era low-poly aesthetic, despite the new consoles HD capability. This did lead to quite good performance however. But given its time and place, it never would recreate that which made Wii Sports a cultural phenomenon. Retrospectively it is a time capsule of transition, from the motion-control crazed period to elegant touch and motion control integration of the future.
