A tennis game that emphasises arcade style spectacle with exaggerated shots and towering rallies, combining accessible mechanics with the thrill of competitive play and the drama of power versus precision.
Description
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is an arcade style sports game that brings Mario franchise characters to the tennis court in fast-paced, colourful matches. The Wii U instalment of the series introduces crisp HD visuals, and new mechanics like the Mega Mushroom, which turns characters giant for powerful smashes.
Despite the greatly enhanced presentation the game lacks the depth of previous entries. Modes are limited, with a focus on standard matches and a barebones single-player experience, leaving longtime fans wanting more variety and content. The polished presentation and fun local multiplayer it can leave some disappointment feeling like a stripped down version of the Mario Tennis formula. The subsequent Switch Mario Tennis Aces release three years later felt like the full realisation of this game.
