Space Harrier

スペースハリアー

An enhanced port of the classic arcade rail shooter, featuring fast-paced, third-person gameplay where players control a flying protagonist battling surreal enemies across colourful, scrolling landscapes. This version had substantially improved graphics and smoother scaling compared to previous home releases making it a great port for the time.

Description

Space Harrier for the 32X is a home conversion of Sega’s 1985 arcade classic, a third‑person rail shooter designed by Yu Suzuki. Released alongside the 32X add‑on in late 1994, it was one of the most faithful home versions of the game at the time, thanks to the 32X’s expanded colour palette and sprite‑scaling capabilities. The premise remains the same as in the arcade original: you play as the jet‑propelled hero Harrier, flying at high speed through the surreal “Fantasy Zone” to defend the peaceful dragons of Dragon Land from an invasion of bizarre creatures and mechanical foes.

The gameplay is fast‑paced and relentless, with Harrier able to move freely in eight directions while continuously firing his under‑arm laser cannon. Stages feature checkerboard landscapes, stone pillars, alien beasts, and airborne geometric shapes, all rushing toward the player as the background scrolls rapidly. Most levels end with a large boss battle, while two bonus stages let Harrier ride the friendly dragon Uriah to smash through obstacles for extra points. The 32X version preserves the arcade’s smooth scaling and colourful visuals far better than earlier console ports, making it a showcase title for the add‑on’s technical strengths despite its short length.
