Network Adaptor Start-up Disc v2.0

Description

The Network Adaptor Start-up Disc for the PlayStation 2 is a setup utility disc used to configure the console for internet connectivity so players could access online multiplayer features. Because the original PS2 did not include built-in networking, players needed a separate network adapter and this disc to get started.

The disc contains a setup program that guided users through configuring their broadband connection (such as DSL or cable), entering network details if required, and testing whether the console could successfully connect to the internet. The settings were then saved to a PS2 memory card as a network configuration profile. Once the network settings are saved, compatible games can use them to connect to online services and multiplayer servers. This allowed players to access early online titles such as SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs, Final Fantasy XI, and Resident Evil Outbreak. In later years, PS2 games include their own built-in network setup tools, making the Network Access Disc less necessary, but it was originally an essential step for enabling online play on the console. Comparatively, Xbox used centralised accounts and services for its Xbox Live features, however this initially also required a Starter Kit Disc. Given the Dreamcast has a similar network setup inbuilt into its online games and Internet browser, Sony’s approach did seem like a mere afterthought rather than a well thought out platform strategy.
