Worms Blast

A compact arcade action game that reworks a familiar strategy series into a physics driven shooting puzzle built around short sessions and score play. Received a PAL-only release, after US release was cancelled. Australian version is UK/EU version with added local classification stickers

Description

Worms Blast presents the series cast in a lighter, more abstract setting, replacing turn based warfare with continuous action. Matches take place on small circular arenas filled with stacked blocks, with each worm piloting a small craft rather than standing on terrain. The tone remains comic and competitive, but the focus shifts to quick reactions and spatial awareness rather than long term planning. This framing places the game closer to arcade puzzle shooters than to its own tactical predecessors.

Gameplay centres on firing weapons to destroy blocks and destabilise structures while avoiding falling debris. Players rotate around the arena, adjusting angle and timing to clear paths or force collapses that damage opponents. Weapons echo familiar tools from the series such as rockets and punches, but they are adapted for rapid use rather than turn based calculation. Modes include a puzzle focused option built around preset layouts and an arcade style mode with opposing worms controlled by the game or another player. Progression unlocks additional stages and challenges rather than expanding the move set in complex ways.

On release, reviews were mixed and often cautious. Critics praised the clarity of the mechanics and the immediate feel of the physics, but many noted the limited variety of stages and the absence of the strategic depth associated with the mainline games. Some also commented that the action could feel repetitive over longer sessions. In later years, the game is remembered as an unusual side project that experimented with the brand rather than extending it, and is often mentioned alongside other early 2000s arcade style reinterpretations of established series. It stands as a small scale, self contained entry that reflects a period when familiar properties were tested in simpler, faster forms.
