Metal Gear Rising: Revengance is set four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, following Raiden, a former child soldier turned cyborg ninja working for a private security firm. When a routine escort mission in Africa ends in a bloody coup, Raiden is thrust into a global conspiracy involving a shadowy PMC seeking to restart the war economy through cybernetic organ harvesting. The story explores the ethics of private military companies and the “war on terror” through a hyper-stylised lens, featuring iconic, over-the-top antagonists like Jetstream Sam and Senator Steven Armstrong. The atmosphere is defined by its unrelenting intensity and a philosophical clash over the true meaning of justice in a commodified world.

Gameplay features a combat system built entirely around the Blade Mode mechanic, which allows for precision slicing of enemies and environmental objects in 360 degrees. This is paired with the Zandatsu “cut and take” system, where players must surgically dismember foes to extract energy cores that instantly replenish Raiden’s health and fuel.
