Ridge Racers

リッジレーサーズ

A racing game built around speed, spectacle, and the rhythm of drifting. Known for its series’ association with PlayStation, this was a launch title for Sony’s first handheld console, acting as a showcase for its technical performance.

Description

Ridge Racers re‑frames Namco’s long‑running series for handheld hardware, emphasising its signature drift mechanics and stylised presentation. The game situates racing as a balance between control and spectacle, with exaggerated cornering and high‑speed manoeuvres defining its identity. It draws upon the series’ established aesthetic of bright tracks, pulsating music, and arcade immediacy, positioning the PSP as capable of delivering console‑quality experiences in a portable format.

The game compiles courses and vehicles from earlier entries, functioning in part as a celebration of the franchise. Players select from a roster of cars tuned for different handling styles, while the drift system remains central, rewarding precision and rhythm in cornering. The PSP hardware allows for smooth frame rates and detailed track environments, situating Ridge Racers alongside contemporaries such as Wipeout Pure as demonstrations of the system’s graphical capacity. The game also introduces nitrous boosts, adding a layer of tactical timing to its established drift‑based play.

Contemporary reception praised the game’s visual fidelity and responsive controls, noting its role as a launch showcase for the PSP. Given the PSP and Nintendo DS launched close together, it really set the stage for the two console’s quite different approaches. The game did have a limited variety of modes and lacked a full career structure, but was accessible truly technically impressive when only weeks prior the Game Boy Advance was best handheld out there. Retrospectively Ridge Racers distills the series’ arcade essence and helped defined the PSP’s early library.
