Kollon

ころんKOLLON

A falling‑block puzzle game where players rotate clusters of coloured squares to clear groups of four or more, building chains as the playfield steadily rises. It served as a vibrant launch-window title for the PlayStation Portable in late 2004, ported from the arcades.

Description

Kollon, known as Koloomn internationally and Ultimate Block Party in America , is an accessible but fast‑paced puzzle play, drawing comparisons to titles like Tetris and Puyo Puyo while carving out its own identity. The game’s atmosphere is defined by its “Pop-Art” aesthetic and a high-energy, quirky soundtrack that captures the experimental and stylish energy typical of early PSP and NDS Japanese software.

The gameplay relies on a unique “rotate-and-match” mechanic, a significant functional departure from the falling-block style common to the genre. In Colleen the screen fills from the bottom up with multi-colored blocks, and players control a 2×2 cursor to rotate groups of four blocks clockwise to create matches of three or more of the same colour. A major technical addition is the Chain Reaction system, where clever positioning allows for massive cascading clears that send “garbage blocks” to an opponent’s screen, making it a highly competitive and fast-paced experience. The mechanics feature several distinct modes, including Challenge Mode, a Story Mode featuring a cast of eccentric characters, and a Versus Mode that utilized the PSP’s Ad-Hoc wireless capabilities for local multiplayer skirmishes.

For a launch title it was lauded for its addictive simplicity and its perfect fit for short-burst handheld gaming sessions. Although the core concept was easy to grasp, the high-speed “Panic” difficulty levels required a level of pattern recognition and manual dexterity that rivalled the best in the genre. The game received a sequel that was exclusive to Japan and Korea.
