Terranigma
A truly great game and story. Original Japanese release in October 1995 titled: Tenchi Sōzō, translated: Creation of Heaven and Earth. Release date uncertain, passed OFLC classification on 10/10/1996, however was released close to the Nintendo 64 launch. This may have contributed to it not being released in the US. Locally this was just another niche JRPG release that didn’t garner much attention. This consistently was the most asked for title. For a few years I searched for any copies I could find to ship to people in the US.
Description
The game commences in the cliche RPG manner. playing as Ark who is a mischievous boy from an underworld village. After opening a forbidden door in his village, he triggers a series of events that lead to the resurrection of Earth’s continents and life itself. The game quickly becomes deeply emotional in its storytelling and philosophical in its themes (creation, evolution, humanity’s development). The overarching goal is to revive the surface world—bringing back plants, animals, humans, and ultimately, civilisation—culminating in a battle between light and dark forces, including Ark’s mysterious origin. As a later-era 16-bit RPG, it is a very large game and due to its limited release has gained a cult following. It is considered a spiritual successor to earlier Quintet titles like Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, forming a so called “Qunitet trilogy.”
