Description

Dream Audition is a home conversion of an arcade title built around singing into a microphone rather than traditional rhythm-button play. It sits somewhere between a karaoke simulator, a party game, and an audition-themed music challenge, arriving during the early-PS2 period when publishers were experimenting with unusual microphone-based software beyond conventional rhythm-action formulas.

Players sing along to a large library of songs while the game judges their pitch and performance, turning karaoke into a score-based challenge. The game features around 100 songs, drawing not only from the arcade version but also from J-pop, anime theme songs, and other recognisable pop material. It provides a number of modes, including Arcade Mode, Karaoke Mode, Story Mode, Nonstop / Audition-style challenge modes, and an Edit Mode that lets players create material by humming into the microphone. The judging system is more based on vocal tone and melodic contour than lyrical accuracy, which gives it a slightly different feel from standard lyric-following karaoke software.

Contemporary reviews frame it as a lively home party game with an undeniably fun concept, especially when played with friends or family, but also as a somewhat rough early attempt to bring karaoke-gaming into the PS2 era. During this era this microphone-based games remaining very new, with only a handful of prior experimental examples on the Dreamcast and Nintendo 64. Dream Audition provided an accessible, casual at-home singing experience, however criticisms revolved around the limited presentation, the fact that many tracks are only partially included rather than full-length, and the relatively narrow long-term depth of the core singing system. Even so, it clearly found enough of an audience to launch a small series on the platform, making it a notable example of Jaleco’s more offbeat early-2000s PS2 output.
