Mario & Luigi: Brothership

ペーパーマリオRPG

A character-driven role‑playing adventure built around brotherly teamwork and exploration in a freshly realised 3D world. It showcases a shift from handheld limitations to a console‑level experience and highlights evolving combat dynamics in the series.

Description

Mario & Luigi: Brothership centres on Mario and Luigi after they are transported through a mysterious portal to Concordia, a shattered land composed of drifting islands. They travel aboard Shipshape Island, a floating vessel that functions as both home base and mode of transportation. The plot focuses on reuniting the people of Concordia and restoring connection across the world, emphasising themes of cooperation and discovery through puzzles, quests and light‑hearted character interactions. The game is the sixth entry in the Mario & Luigi series and the first for a home console. It sees the series fully in 3D, shifting from handheld sprite‑based designs.

Gameplay retains the core turn‑based battle system familiar to the Mario & Luigi series while introducing a new 3D overworld built for home consoles. Combat continues to rely on timing‑based Bros. Attacks and shared control of both brothers, and adds dynamic teamwork moves through “Battle Plugs” that equip strategic modifiers. Exploration emphasises journey and discovery as players unlock new islands via the ocean map and cannon‑launched traversal.

Initial reviews praised the rich visuals, refreshed art style and expanded world design, but noted performance hiccups and inconsistent pacing. Thankfully another title slightly limited by the aging Switch hardware easily fixed on the Switch 2 console. Critical reception highlighted the combat updates and engaging story, but some found the puzzle logic and fetch‑quest structure overly hand‑holding for older players. Overall perceptions are positive: the game brings the series to 3D, maintaining its charm, and combining nostalgic turn‑based battles with deeper exploration. An ambitious evolution that honours its lineage while embracing new possibilities.
