Description
Pokémon Shield is the first mainline Pokémon games released for a home console, although to be fair the Switch is a hybrid. It was released alongside Pokémon Sword.
The games introduce players to a fresh Pokémon journey with new characters, mechanics, and species. It takes place in the UK-inspired Galar region. Completely unsurprising, you play as a young Trainer on a quest to become the Galar Champion. The gameplay is the classic Pokémon formula: catching, exploration, and turn-based battles. It is presented in a full 3D environment, with the playing travelling to towns, wild areas, and stadiums while challenging Gym Leaders and completing the Pokédex.
The Galar Pokédex initially restricted available species to those native to the region, a decision that sparked debate among fans. Expansion Pass content later broadened the roster through the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, adding new areas, Pokémon, and modes such as Dynamax Adventures. Contemporary reception in 2019 praised the streamlined design, vibrant world, and accessibility for newcomers, though critics noted technical limitations and the controversy surrounding the reduced Pokédex.
