Fire Emblem Engage
ファイアーエムブレム エンゲージA tactical RPG and the seventeenth mainline entry in the Fire Emblem series, it celebrates the series’ legacy with refined strategy gameplay and flashy mechanics, although with a lighter, anime-inspired story and characters.
Description
Fire Emblem Engage follows Alear, the Divine Dragon, who awakens after a thousand-year slumber to find the Fell Dragon Sombron threatening the continent of Elyos. To stop him, Alear must gather twelve Emblem Rings, each containing the spirit of a hero from past Fire Emblem games, and rally allies from across Elyos’ kingdoms. The story is straightforward compared to the morally complex Three Houses, leaning into a more colorful, heroic fantasy tone. While some enjoy its brisk, Saturday-morning-anime style, some argue the narrative shallow and repetitive, with Alear’s role as the Divine Dragon often reducing interactions to formulaic reverence.
The gameplay however is great. Engage refines the series’ tactical combat, emphasising positioning, weapon advantages, and the new Engage mechanic, which allows characters to merge with Emblem heroes for powerful abilities. The battles are fast-paced, visually dynamic, and strategically deep, offering one of the most polished combat systems in the franchise. Between fights, players can explore the Somniel hub to train, bond with allies, and manage resources, though the social elements are lighter than in Three Houses.
Intelligent Systems deliberately shifted away from the branching, choice-driven narrative of Three Houses to focus on a single, linear story that would highlight the tactical gameplay. The art style was designed to be vibrant and celebratory, with character designs that stood out more flamboyantly than past entries. This all lead to some people being divided. The combat depth, visuals, and music, are one of the strongest gameplay experiences in the series. However, the story, characters, and worldbuilding are felt by some as comparatively weak, even forgettable. Regardless, Engage sold well, with over 1.6 million copies in its first three months.
