Paper Mario: Sticker Star (Nintendo Selects)

ペーパーマリオスーパーシール

A role‑playing adventure for Nintendo 3DS that reimagined the Paper Mario formula around single‑use stickers as both combat tools and puzzle solutions.

Description

Paper Mario: Sticker Star is the fourth entry in the Paper Mario series and the first designed for a handheld console. It follows Mario and his new companion Kersti, a sticker fairy, on a quest to recover the six Royal Stickers scattered across the Mushroom Kingdom after Bowser disrupted the annual Sticker Fest and absorbed one of the comet’s powers. The game retained the papercraft aesthetic of earlier entries but leaned more heavily into the “paper” theme, with environments resembling dioramas and characters openly acknowledging their paper nature. Unlike its predecessors, the structure was divided into discrete worlds and stages rather than continuous chapters, giving it a more level‑based progression.

Combat was turn‑based but stripped of many traditional RPG elements. Instead of badges, partners, or permanent upgrades, Mario relied entirely on stickers collected in the environment. These stickers represented attacks, items, or special “Thing Stickers” derived from real‑world objects, and each was consumed upon use. This system emphasised resource management and exploration, as players constantly replenished their sticker album to remain effective in battle. The game also introduced the “Paperize” mechanic, allowing Mario to peel back parts of the environment and place stickers to solve puzzles or reveal hidden paths. While the story was deliberately minimal at Shigeru Miyamoto’s request, the presentation was colourful and humorous, with witty dialogue and playful references to the papercraft world.

Reception was mildly positive with it being strong in visuals, charm, and creativity of the sticker mechanics, but the loss of deeper RPG systems, the absence of unique partner characters, and the sometimes opaque puzzle solutions tied to specific stickers all left it a bit lacking. Despite this, Sticker Star sold over 2.4 million copies worldwide and influenced later entries such as Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U). The game remains notable as a turning point for the series, marking Nintendo’s shift away from traditional RPG mechanics toward experimental, puzzle‑driven design within the Paper Mario framework.
