Nintendo Labo Robot Kit

ニンテンドーラボ ロボット キット

A do-it-yourself cardboard construction set bundled with interactive software that allows players to build and wear a Toy-Con Robot suit, transforming physical movement into in-game actions. By inserting Joy-Con controllers into the assembled backpack and visor, players can stomp, punch, and even transform into a vehicle, creating an immersive, full-body gameplay experience.

Description

The Robot Kit, formally titled Nintendo Labo: Toy-Con 02 Robot Kit, was the second entry in the Labo series, after the Variety Kit. It was sold as a stand‑alone package, requiring only the Nintendo Switch console and Joy‑Con controllers to function. The kit includes 19 pre-cut cardboard sheets, 4 cardstock sheets, reflective stickers, orange and blue strings, adjustable fabric straps, and eyelets, along with a game card containing interactive build instructions, mini-games, and the Toy-Con Garage programming environment. No glue or scissors are required, and all necessary materials are provided in the box.

The Robot Kit centers on a single, elaborate Toy-Con: a wearable robot suit comprising a backpack, hand grips, foot straps, and a visor. Players insert Joy-Con controllers into the backpack and visor, enabling motion tracking through pulleys and reflective markers. This setup translates arm and leg movements into on-screen actions, allowing players to smash buildings, battle enemies, and unlock special abilities. The game features multiple modes, including a city-destruction challenge, a visor-controlled first-person view, and a transformation mechanic that turns the robot into a vehicle when crouching. A two-player battle mode is also available when each player has their own Robot Kit.

As with other Labo releases, the Robot Kit emphasises Nintendo’s “Make, Play, Discover” philosophy. Beyond assembly and gameplay, the software includes discovery modules explaining how Joy-Con sensors, such as gyroscopes and infrared cameras, interact with the cardboard mechanisms. The Toy-Con Garage mode allows users to experiment with custom configurations, fostering creativity and technical understanding. While the kit only offers a single Toy-Con, its immersive design and physical engagement make it one of the most distinctive Labo experiences.
