Description
The Mega Drive Stereo DIN Plug Cord is the official audio‑video accessory produced for Sega’s revised design 16‑bit console. It connects to the multi‑pin DIN output port on the rear of the Mega Drive 2 and provides stereo audio alongside composite video. This improved on the default option in Japan, which was a mono audio, composite video cable.
The cord terminates in RCA connectors, typically two for left and right audio channels and one for composite video, allowing direct connection to televisions or audio equipment. This was significant because the original Mega Drive 2 hardware had added output stereo sound through its rear DIN port, where previously the front headphone jack was needed. The dedicated cord ensured cleaner audio without requiring headphone‑jack cabling, and it simplified integration with home stereo systems.
At the time of release, the accessory was marketed as part of Sega’s official peripheral line up. Other AV solutions included the RF Unit and SCART cables in Europe.
