A simulation‑style racer that positions itself as a direct rival to Gran Turismo, offering a large roster of licensed cars, detailed tuning, and a career structure built around authenticity and progression.

Description

Sega GT: Homologation Special, localised internationally as simply Sega GT, places players in a Championship Mode where licences must be earned to enter higher‑tier events, echoing the structure of its PlayStation counterpart. Over 130 cars from manufacturers such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Ford are available, each modelled with specifications intended to reflect its real‑world performance. Prize money earned through races can be spent on purchasing new vehicles or upgrading existing ones, while a car creation mode allows players to build a machine from scratch using acquired parts. The game features 22 tracks, ranging from circuits to city courses, and supports both single‑player and multiplayer competition.

The title was Sega’s most ambitious attempt to challenge the dominance of Gran Turismo, arriving at a time when the Dreamcast was competing against the rising popularity of the PlayStation 2. Compared to Sega Rally, which emphasised arcade immediacy, Sega GT leaned into simulation, aiming to capture the same audience drawn to realism and depth. The European release added further licensed cars, including models from Alfa Romeo, Mercedes‑Benz, and Audi, broadening its appeal.

The game was praised for the breadth of content, the customisation options, and the attempt to deliver a “Gran Turismo‑like” experience on Sega’s hardware. Sega GT: Homologation Special stands as one of the Dreamcast’s most substantial racing titles, remembered as both a technical showcase and a bold statement of intent in the sim‑racing space. This Japanese release came packaged in a quad CD case not because of multiple disks but the two manuals and quick reference guide, in addition to the usual warranty, Dream Point Bank, Dream Lineup cards, and not forgetting the spine card. For better or worse I originally had a PAL copy of the game, which this replaced.
