RIGS: Mechanized Combat League

Mech combat presented as a futuristic sports spectacle, earning praise as a bold VR showcase but fading quickly due to technical and community challenges.

Description

RIGS: Mechanized Combat League casts players as athletes piloting giant exosuits in a futuristic televised sport, blending mech combat with the spectacle of competitive leagues. Matches take place in stylised arenas and feature modes inspired by traditional sports, such as scoring goals or carrying an “endzone” ball, alongside straightforward team battles. The tone is deliberately sporting rather than militaristic: commentary, sponsorships, and stadium crowds frame the action as entertainment, with the Rigs themselves presented as extensions of athletic skill. Themes of technology fused with human performance, and competition as spectacle, run throughout.

The game was a launch title for the PlayStation VR. It was praised its ambition, immersion, and the thrill of VR cockpit combat, marking it as one of the most striking early showcases of PSVR. However, performance issues, motion sickness, and a dwindling online community limited its longevity, and support ended with the closure of Guerrilla Cambridge in 2017.
