PlayStation VR Demo Disc

A sampler disc that bundled together short slices of virtual reality experiences, designed to introduce players to the range of genres and mechanics possible with the headset.

Description

The PlayStation VR Demo Disc was included with early PS VR hardware packages and later updated into multiple volumes, each offering a rotating selection of trial versions. The first disc, released alongside the headset in 2016, featured titles such as Driveclub VR, PlayStation VR Worlds, RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, Battlezone, EVE: Valkyrie, Headmaster, Tumble VR, and Wayward Sky. These demos were deliberately varied: racing, sports, puzzle, space combat, and cinematic immersion, giving new owners a curated tour of what the technology could do.

The approach echoed earlier console eras where demo discs served as both marketing and onboarding tools, comparable to the PlayStation Underground discs of the late 1990s or the bundled sampler discs for Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. In the VR context, however, the demos had an added importance: they helped acclimate players to motion controls and headset comfort, while also letting them test different genres before committing to full purchases. Reception was generally positive, with players appreciating the variety and the chance to showcase VR to friends. These “starter packs” consequently were just for sampling games but for legitimising the headset as a platform with breadth and ambition.
