Description

The PlayStation VR was Sony’s first dedicated virtual reality system, positioning itself as a more accessible alternative to PC‑based VR headsets of the time. The headset featured a 5.7‑inch OLED display with a resolution of 1080p (960×1080 per eye), a 100‑degree field of view, and refresh rates of 90–120 Hz. Nine positional LEDs on the headset were tracked by the PlayStation Camera, enabling 360‑degree head movement. A separate processor unit handled 3D audio and mirrored video output to a television, allowing for both solo immersion and for others to watch.

The system supported multiple input methods, including the DualShock 4 controller, PlayStation Move motion controllers, and the PlayStation Aim controller for compatible shooters. It experienced strong software support, with a library included dedicated VR experiences such as Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Blood & Truth, and Farpoint, alongside VR modes in larger titles like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Star Wars: Squadrons. Many other titles added VR retrospectively through updates.

While praised for its affordability the PlayStation VR did rely on external accessories (PlayStation Camera, Move controllers) and had  a lower resolution compared to high‑end PC headsets. Nevertheless, by the end of 2019 Sony had sold over 5 million units worldwide, making highly successful by VR platform standards. It demonstrated that console VR could be viable at scale, paving the way for its successor, PlayStation VR2, released for PlayStation 5.
