PlayStation Camera

プレイステーション カメラ

A motion‑sensing and video accessory for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, used for streaming, voice commands, facial recognition, and tracking the PlayStation VR headset. Revised design launched alongside the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro.

Description

The PlayStation Camera was originally released alongside the PlayStation 4 in late-2013 as the successor to the PlayStation Eye on PS3. It features dual 1280×800 pixel lenses with an 85‑degree field of view, capable of operating at different frame rates (60 Hz at full resolution, 120 Hz at lower resolution, and up to 240 Hz at minimal resolution). This dual‑lens setup allows for depth perception and motion tracking, similar in concept but simpler to Microsoft’s Kinect. This model is a redesigned cylindrical version was released in 2016, featuring a stand for adjustable angles. Both camera models plugged into the PS4s AUX port and not USB. The PS4 treated the camera as a native system component on a dedicated bus, with its own pinout and signalling protocol, rather than enumerating it through the generic USB stack

The camera includes a four‑channel microphone array, which reduces background noise and enables voice commands for system navigation and in‑game functions. It also supports facial recognition, allowing users to log in hands‑free by simply facing the camera. It integrates with broadcasting features, letting players livestream gameplay with picture‑in‑picture video commentary, and works with augmented reality apps such as The Playroom.

For PlayStation VR, released in 2016, the camera is essential: it tracks the position of the headset, the DualShock 4’s light bar, and PlayStation Move controllers, enabling accurate motion input. To enable backwards compatibility on PS5, the original PS4 PlayStation Camera could still be used, but only through a special adaptor that Sony provided free to PSVR owners. This adaptor converted the camera’s proprietary AUX connector into a standard USB interface, allowing the PS5 to recognise it. The adaptor acted as a bridge, translating the AUX pinout into USB so the PS5 could handle the data stream through its normal USB stack. In practice, this meant the PS4 Camera continued to function for PlayStation VR tracking on PS5, but it wasn’t supported for general streaming or broadcasting. For those purposes, Sony introduced the HD Camera, which connects directly via USB and is optimised for high‑quality video capture rather than VR tracking.

Though not bundled with consoles, the PlayStation Camera sold strongly at launch, with nearly a million units shipped in its first months. It remains compatible with PS5 via an adaptor, though Sony later introduced the HD Camera as its successor.
