A richly written, science-fantasy role-playing game set in Monte Cook’s Ninth World, where your choices, relationships, and philosophy matter far more than combat.
Description
Torment: Tides of Numenera transports players to the Ninth World, a distant-future Earth layered atop the ruins of countless fallen civilisations, where remnants of ultra-advanced technology (“numenera”) are treated as magic. You play as the Last Castoff, a discarded body once inhabited by the godlike “Changing God,” now hunted by an unstoppable entity known as the Sorrow. The game unfolds in an isometric, pre-rendered style reminiscent of late-’90s CRPGs, with a heavy emphasis on dialogue, exploration, and moral choice over traditional combat.
Instead of a binary good/evil alignment, the game uses the Tides system — five color-coded philosophical forces representing the impact you have on the world and how others perceive you. Your actions shape your legacy, influencing story paths, abilities, and how characters react. With three core classes and a wealth of companions, quests often have multiple solutions, from persuasion to stealth to creative use of the numenera.
Funded via a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, Tides of Numenera stands out as a modern CRPG that prizes narrative depth, player agency, and ultimately challenges you to consider the lasting impact of a single life.
