Description
Death Stranding is set in a post‑apocalyptic United States after a mysterious event, the “Death Stranding”, which has blurred the line between the living and the dead. Players control Sam Porter Bridges (portrayed by Norman Reedus), a courier tasked with delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via the “Chiral Network,” all while navigating supernatural threats called BTs, hostile humans, and treacherous terrain.
Gameplay blends open‑world exploration with a unique focus on traversal, cargo management, and asynchronous online features. Players can leave structures, paths, and supplies in their world that appear in others’, fostering indirect cooperation. Combat exists but is secondary to planning routes, balancing loads, and using tools like ladders, ropes, and vehicles to overcome environmental challenges. The tone is meditative and often surreal, mixing long stretches of solitude with bursts of tension, underscored by a cinematic narrative and a soundtrack featuring artists like Low Roar.
At launch, Death Stranding was one of the most talked‑about games of the generation—praised for its visuals, performances (including Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Margaret Qualley), and originality, but polarising for its slow pace and unconventional “strand” gameplay. Many noted eerie parallels between its themes of isolation and connection and the real‑world COVID‑19 pandemic, which began months after release. It went on to sell over 5 million copies by mid‑2021, win multiple awards, receive an expanded Director’s Cut, and see a sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
