GBA launch title in all markets. Sold in Japan as Konami Wai Wai Racing Advance. A quite decent racing title that was always going to be overshadowed by Mario Kart longterm.
Description
Konami Krazy Racers, known in Japan as Konami Wai Wai Racing Advance, was released as a launch title for the Game Boy Advance. It followed the template established by Mario Kart, with Mode 7‑style tracks, drifting, and item pickups, but distinguished itself through its cast. Characters such as Goemon, Dracula, Gray Fox, and the Moai head from Gradius were all playable, each with unique statistics. The game featured twelve racers in total, with eight available from the start and four unlockable through progression. Items were collected via bells scattered across the track, echoing mechanics from the TwinBee series, and coins could be spent in a shop between races.
Beyond its core racing, the game introduced a license test system, requiring players to complete challenges to unlock new circuits, a feature that added structure and replay value. Battle modes such as Bomb Chaser and Chicken provided additional variety, while the overall presentation leaned into Konami’s self‑referential humor, with menus styled like a computer desktop and music drawn from multiple series. The general reception was positive, with reviewers praising its technical polish and the novelty of its crossover cast. Some noted that it lacked the long‑term depth of its better‑known rival. In retrospect, it provided a kart experience early in the GBAs life and characters from Konami’s broader catalogue. An example of how publishers experimented with mascot racers to showcase their intellectual properties.
