A 1997 kart‑racing and adventure game developed by Rare featuring ten playable characters, three vehicle types (car, hovercraft, and aeroplane), and a story‑driven Adventure Mode in which Diddy Kong and friends race to defeat the intergalactic wizard pig Wizpig.
Description
Diddy Kong Racing was Rare’s answer to the kart‑racing boom of the mid‑1990s. Unlike Mario Kart 64, it combined traditional circuit racing with an over world hub and progression system. Players explored Timber’s Island, unlocking five themed worlds: Dino Domain, Snowflake Mountain, Sherbet Island, Dragon Forest, and Future Fun Land. Each world contains four racetracks, a boss challenge, and hidden collectibles.
The game’s roster included Diddy Kong alongside original Rare characters such as Timber the Tiger, Pipsy the Mouse, and Tiptup the Turtle. Notably, Banjo the Bear and Conker the Squirrel made their first appearances here before starring in Banjo‑Kazooie and Conker’s Pocket Tales. Each racer could compete using cars, hovercrafts, or planes, with track design tailored to exploit the strengths and weaknesses of each vehicle. Power‑up balloons granted temporary boosts, weapons, or shields, while bananas collected on track increased top speed.
Diddy Kong Racing was praised for its graphics, soundtrack by David Wise, and ambitious Adventure Mode, which blended racing with light exploration and boss battles. It became the fastest‑selling video game of its time, moving 800,000 copies before Christmas 1997, and ultimately sold 4.8 million units worldwide, ranking as the Nintendo 64’s eighth best‑selling title. A planned GameCube sequel (Donkey Kong Racing) was cancelled after Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare in 2002, while the Nintendo DS remake (Diddy Kong Racing DS, 2007) added touch‑screen features and online play but removed Banjo and Conker due to licensing.
The Australian release date is not in databases. OFLC classification date was 21/10/1997. The PAL and JP release was on 21/11/1997, and North America was 24/11/1997. Rare games often pushed for worldwide release dates, so it was likely the 21st in Australia. Regardless, we bought it on the 24th, so was the same month at least!
