ARMS
アームズA fighting game built around extendable arms and exaggerated movement, combining cartoonish spectacle with competitive mechanics, and exploring the balance between accessibility and depth in combat design.
Description
ARMS is a 3D fighting game launch very early in the life of the Nintendo Switch. It reimagines hand to hand combat through the use of extendable, weaponised limbs. Players choose from a roster of eccentric fighters each with unique abilities and personalities and customisable “ARMS” that vary in weight, elemental effects, and attack patterns. Battles take place in circular arenas where movement, timing, and positioning are key, with mechanics like charged attacks, grabs, and rush combos adding tactical depth.
Beyond standard one-on-one matches, the game has alternative modes such as basketball, volleyball with explosive balls), and ‘Hedlok Scramble’, where players compete for control of a powerful mask. Multiplayer is supported locally and online, with ranked matches and party lobbies accommodating up to 20 players. While its motion controls were a launch highlight, ARMS also supports traditional inputs, making it accessible across play styles. Its vibrant aesthetic and inventive mechanics helped it carve out a niche within Nintendo’s fighting catalogue, surprisingly selling over 2.7 million copies worldwide by the end of 2022.
