Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
進め! キノピオ隊長An adorable puzzle-platforming adventure built around compact diorama-like stages, where observation, camera control, and route planning replace the jumping traditionally associated with Mario games.
Description
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker expands the Captain Toad challenges introduced in Super Mario 3D World into a standalone game. Captain Toad and Toadette discover a Power Star, only for the treasure-seeking bird Wingo to seize it and carry Toadette away. Captain Toad sets out to rescue her, with the two explorers later exchanging roles as Wingo repeatedly captures one of them. The light story is presented through three illustrated episodes and brief animated scenes, with each chapter containing increasingly elaborate treasure hunts and encounters with Wingo.
Stages are self-contained miniature worlds that can be rotated and examined from different angles. Neither character can jump because of their heavy backpacks, so you must instead climb ladders, use pipes, activate switches, fall between platforms, and manipulate the environment to reach each Power Star. Rotating the camera reveals concealed passages and changes how overlapping structures are understood, turning apparently simple spaces into three-dimensional puzzles. Each stage also contains three hidden Super Gems and an additional challenge, such as finding a concealed Gold Mushroom, collecting a specified number of coins, or completing the level without taking damage. Enemies are avoided or defeated by dropping onto them, throwing plucked turnips, using environmental hazards, or collecting temporary power-ups. While mechanically different, it retains the colourful visual style and many mechanics of Super Mario 3D World.
The Wii U GamePad is required and displays the game independently of the television, providing interaction with each environment through its touchscreen, microphone, and motion controls. Sometimes this feels imposed where conventional buttons would have been more comfortable.
Bonus challenges revisit locations inspired by Super Mario 3D World, with some unlocked by having 3D World save data, while amiibo support adds further objectives. The game’s design and innovation were widely praised, although the main episodes can be completed relatively quickly. Completing every treasure and clearing the demanding bonus stages substantially extends the game.
