Sengoku Musou 3 Z follows the unification of Japan during the Sengoku period through the intertwined stories of legendary samurai and daimyo. The narrative is presented through individual character arcs that explore themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the ephemeral nature of life on the battlefield. It depicts historical conflicts from the perspectives of both veteran figures and a new generation of warriors, maintaining a dramatic and cinematic tone that balances historical events with stylised character drama. The atmosphere is defined by its traditional Japanese aesthetic, featuring period-accurate costume designs and an orchestral score that incorporates classical instrumentation.

The gameplay consists of third-person combat where players use character-specific weapons and techniques to defeat thousands of enemies across varied historical maps. A significant technical addition is the Kaiden system, an ultimate tier of the Musou attack that triggers a powerful cinematic finisher when the spirit gauge is at its maximum. This release features over 40 playable characters, incorporating all content from the original Sengoku Musou 3 and its expansion, Sengoku Musou 3 Moushouden. The Shin Sangoku Musou series focuses on the mythical and grand scale of the Chinese Three Kingdoms period, utilising high speed combat and fluid attack chains to depict the rise and fall of empires. In contrast, Sengoku Musou examines the personal honour and unification struggles of the Japanese Warring States era through a more technical martial arts system.

The title was praised for its massive volume of content and the technical improvement in frame rate compared with the original version. The inclusion of the Murasame Castle mode and the removal of regional online restrictions were significant benefits for the player base.
