Golvellius: Valley of Doom

魔王ゴルベリアス

An enhanced adaptation of Compile’s MSX action-RPG, combining top-down exploration, hidden caves, side-scrolling dungeons, equipment upgrades, and a surprisingly large world.

Description

Golvellius: Valley of Doom is more than a simple port of the 1987 MSX original. It significantly reworks the game with improved graphics, smoother scrolling, enhanced sound, redesigned maps, and entirely new overworld and dungeon layouts while retaining the same basic story. The hero Kelesis enters the Valley of Doom to rescue Princess Rena, who vanished while searching for a rare herb capable of curing her gravely ill father. To save her, he must defeat the servants of the demon Golvellius and recover the crystals needed to confront the final enemy.

Most of the adventure takes place from a top-down perspective similar to The Legend of Zelda, with Kelesis exploring interconnected screens, fighting monsters with a sword, discovering hidden caves, purchasing equipment, and collecting items that unlock access to previously unreachable secrets. Unlike Zelda, however, the world is divided into largely linear regions that are intended to be completed in sequence, while the dungeon sections switch to side-scrolling action stages rather than top-down labyrinths. The Master System version also benefits from improved controls, presentation, and entirely redesigned maps compared with the original MSX release, making it generally regarded as the superior version.

Reception was largely positive, with praise directed at the colourful graphics, memorable soundtrack, large world, and successful blend of exploration and action. However, it has a heavy reliance on grinding, with considerable time needed in new areas to earn money for health upgrades, equipment, and inventory expansions before progress becomes practical. The game’s hidden caves and cryptic clues can also make advancement confusing without experimentation. Despite these frustrations, Golvellius: Valley of Doom remains one of the Master System’s most respected action RPGs and a notable example where a console port substantially improved upon its MSX origins.
