As was typical of this era, the version distributed in Australia was a relabelled North American version. It did mean the release date was earlier than Europe thankfully, receiving classification in December 1996.
Description
The original Diablo on PC drops you into the cursed town of Tristram, sending you deeper and deeper into randomly generated dungeons where every step feels like a gamble between glory and doom. It set the tone for modern action RPGs with its simple point-and-click controls, procedurally generated levels, and a tense yet addictive gameplay loop. You start in the quiet surface world of Tristram, but the real game unfolds below in sixteen increasingly dangerous floors of catacombs, caves, and hellish chambers. Combat is immediate and tactile: click to move, click to attack, and watch loot spill from fallen enemies. The randomness of enemy placement, quest selection, and item drops means no two runs feel the same, and that unpredictability is part of its enduring charm.
The pacing is deliberate, encouraging you to weigh every risk before descending further. Between dungeon dives, you return to town to trade, repair gear, and hear cryptic hints from NPCs. It’s a game that thrives on atmosphere, between the soundtrack, flickers of torchlight, and the slow build of tension as you push toward the final confrontation with the Lord of Terror himself. This is my original copy which I held onto unlike many games over the years, in part due to the game’s timelessness and replayability.
