Kinniku Banzuke GB: Chōsensha wa Kimi da!

筋肉番付GB 〜挑戦者はキミだ!〜

A sports-variety challenge game based on the TV programme Kinniku Banzuke, built around obstacle courses, physical-skill events, rapid input, timing, and repeated record attempts.

Description

Kinniku Banzuke GB: Chōsensha wa Kimi da! turns the physical challenge TV show Kinniku Banzuke’s format into a compact set of Game Boy events. The headline mode is SASUKE, based on the early televised obstacle-course format, with stages built around climbing, balancing, jumping, rope work, conveyor movement, wall lifting, hanging obstacles, and a final rope climb. The player’s challenger has growth stats such as jump, power, speed, and stamina, so repeated attempts gradually improve performance rather than making the game only a one-off minigame collection.

Outside SASUKE, the game includes Muscle Ranking events such as Struck Out, Kick Target, Monster Box, and Brain Panic. These cover baseball target throwing, football target kicking, vault-box jumping, and memory-based number challenges, giving the cartridge a broader sports-variety feel rather than focusing solely on obstacle courses. Some events also unlock harder versions or extra characters when the player reaches specific results.

Compared with Kinniku Banzuke GB2, this first entry feels more like the foundation: fewer event types, but a clear focus on SASUKE and the programme’s most recognisable skill challenges. It is also quite demanding, with strict timing, heavy button mashing, and events that can feel confusing without knowing the show or reading the Japanese menus. Retrospectively it is hard and sometimes awkward, especially because the timing windows and controls are less forgiving than the light TV-show branding suggests.
