Tetris Plus

テトリスプラス

A handheld adaptation of Jaleco’s inventive Tetris spin‑off that brought both traditional line‑clearing and a unique character‑driven puzzle mode to the Game Boy.

Description

The Game Boy version of Tetris Plus condensed the arcade and console content into a handheld format, retaining both Classic Mode(endless Tetris) and the distinctive Puzzle Mode.

Beyond the familiar Classic Mode, which plays like standard Tetris, the defining feature is Puzzle Mode. Here, a small archaeologist known as the Professor is trapped inside the playfield beneath a descending spiked ceiling. The player must clear lines and arrange falling tetrominoes to carve out a safe path, guiding him to the bottom before he is crushed. The Professor’s simple AI — walking back and forth, climbing small steps, falling through gaps, or dozing off when stuck — creates a constant tension between survival and rescue.

The Game Boy version also included Versus play via the Link Cable, letting two players race to save their Professors or compete in Classic Mode. An Edit Mode allowed players to design and test their own puzzle stages, extending replay value. Across its 80 puzzles and 20 bonus stages, the game themed its levels around archaeological sites such as Egypt, Angkor Wat, Maya ruins, and Knossos, with Atlantis as a hidden final stage.

This blend of traditional Tetris mechanics with a rescue‑puzzle twist gave Tetris Plus a distinctive identity in the crowded field of handheld puzzle games, remembered for its quirky Professor character and the pressure of the ever‑descending ceiling.

The Australian release was part of a broader 1997 rollout that brought Tetris Plus to North America and Europe, marking one of the few Jaleco‑originated titles to receive wide distribution across all major Game Boy markets. The Australian release received OFLC classification on 08/07/1997, so the date of release which lines up with a late July to August 1997 release date.
