Medarot 3: Kuwagata Version
メダロット 3 クワガタバージョンThe third entry in the Medarot series, a RPG offering robot‑collecting and battling mechanics where players customise their Medarots and engage in strategic combat across a story‑driven adventure
Description
Medarot 3: Kuwagata Version continues the story of Ikki Tenryou and his friends in Omikuji Town, following directly from Medarot 2. The plot begins with Ikki dreaming of an alien encounter before being drawn into a new Robattle tournament, announced by the Medarot Company with the prize of a trip to a space station. As the tournament unfolds, Ikki and Arika uncover the return of the RoboRobo Gang, who use devices like the MiniMini Machine to shrink themselves and cause chaos. Alongside this familiar threat, a mysterious new adversary emerges that hint at origins beyond human technology. The Kuwagata Version, like its Kabuto counterpart, offers unique Medarot parts and story variations, encouraging collection and trading, similar to its contemporaries Pokémon Gold and Silver.
Gameplay builds on the series’ established turn‑based system with significant innovations. New features include Medachange, allowing certain Medarots to transform mid‑battle into alternate forms; the Medalia system, which expands customisation through medals that affect abilities; and terrain effects that alter strategy depending on the battlefield. Players assemble Medarots from interchangeable head, arms, and legs components. These mechanics made Medarot 3 one of the most complex and strategically demanding entries in the series. Thematically, the game emphasises rivalry, persistence, and the tension between human ingenuity and mysterious external forces. Its tone balances lighthearted adventure through Ikki’s friendships and comedic encounters, with darker undertones introduced by the RoboRobo Gang’s schemes and the enigmatic non‑human adversaries. The narrative’s progression from town settings to underground cities and even the moon underscores the series’ growing ambition.
Reception in Japan was positive among fans who praised the expanded systems and narrative depth. While it never reached the mainstream success of Pokémon, Medarot 3 was recognised for its tactical complexity and ambitious story. It was later re-released in Medarot Classics (3DS) and Medarot Classics Plus (Switch) confirmed its enduring place in the franchise’s legacy
