A creature‑creation adventure that situates imaginative design within a framework of competitive mini‑games.
Description
Kaijuu no Shima: Amazing Island (Translation: Island of Kaijuu ~Amazing Island~; known internationally as Amazing Island) presents a story where you arrive on a mysterious island inhabited by monsters and spirits. The central mechanic allows players to design their own kaijuu using a detailed editor, shaping body parts, colors, and abilities to create unique companions. These creatures then participate in a series of mini‑games and contests, ranging from obstacle courses and races to battles and skill challenges, with performance determined by the attributes assigned during creation.
The presentation emphasises bright, stylised visuals and a whimsical tone, situating the game as both a showcase of user creativity and a playful take on monster‑raising traditions. The editor supports extensive customisation, encouraging experimentation and replayability. When using the GBA Cable, monsters created in the editor could be transferred into the Game Boy Advance. On the handheld, these creatures appeared in a simplified card‑based format, where they could battle against AI opponents or against other players through the GBA multiplayer link. It also enabled additional item unlocks for the GameCube version. By engaging with the card battles on the handheld, players could earn rewards that transferred back into the main game, reinforcing the sense of cross‑platform continuity. This dual structure positioned Amazing Island as both a creative tool on the GameCube and a collectible battling experience on the GBA.
The game was seen as inventive but uneven, with praise for the freedom of the creature editor and the mini‑games being varied in quality and depth. The title appealed to younger audiences. Retrospectively it’s an unusual GameCube title blending monster creation and party‑style competition. It was a classical game from a Sega studio that experimented with mixing genres. A distinctive entry in the broader lineage of creature‑raising games.
